Next Music Producer Freebie mag and other news

Posted by ADR3-N - 4 days ago

Hey guys, popping in a couple days early to make some announcements here, so I don't have to PM them to everyone just yet -- I'm still finishing up editing this month's freebie write-up; I ended up starting a book by accident, and by that I mean a post too big for NG news. Which is saying something.

I'm still transferring bits and pieces of that over to drive and rewriting other parts that referred to it, so I'll probably post the mag around the 25th again. Maybe we'll make that a monthly thing? To be decided.

The book as with almost everything else I do is music production related, basically a catchall expansion of the ideas I've been developing here on the blog. I wrote it as an answer to the ten plus years of music production advice I've gotten, the good, the bad, the stupid -- and what actually works!

I'll be saving a snip for the mag, but I dunno what to do with the in progress file while we wait. Maybe make it available on ko-fi and Patreon? Lemme know your thoughts. I'm new to this actual serious "premium content" biz. Still looking for a title btw, so that's an option. If you want me to name it "ADR3-N's music producer tips and big-back bag of dicks", I'll do it for 50 bucks hahaha.

Speaking of, thank you to all my supporters: @MATRVG, @MariogD, @Cyberdevil, and @JimmyTheCaterpillar. Thanks to you, all of my latest releases here on Newgrounds are ALSO on iTunes and Spotify and everywhere else. You've introduced me to several new hobbies I didn't even think I'd have, and it gives me life <3

In still other news, I'm back to work, starting to recover from WHATEVER THE HELL I'm sick with besides chlorine. However, it won't be for long. I just put in my two weeks; someone is still mixing bleach and other chemicals.

I haven't changed my mind about how great it is to have a part-time job as an indie musician. The money is nice! It even allowed me to afford a DIY vocal booth made out of a grow tent and some panels. Once that's finished I might take a video and show you guys the haul.

It's a strange feeling. I didn't really need the job. My living conditions will be fine, just a little tighter in the pockets. The thing is, I've never really "quit" a job, ever. My first job I went into knowing I'd have to leave for basic training, and my last one I fought tooth and nail not to medically retire.

Of course, the paperwork won. That was the Army, which through all my struggling to stay in taught me: no amount of money is worth your health going down the tubes -- in this case, breathing straight chlorine; I told my bosses about the problem, told the coworker what made me sick, and it's still happening. So, I know I made the right decision. I'd work anything else for them, just not dish! I mean, I guess technically I'm still employed, if an hour a week teaching English to one of our Ukranian gals counts. So there's that.

I'll be fine.

As for how I am now, well I'm rambling, but I quit most of all to get some time to recover. It's officially been two weeks of random headaches, confusion and dizzy spells, forgetting why I went into the kitchen, or what I came here to write as you can see. I decided, enough with the stress and dreading getting sick every time I go in for an early morning slog. Time to line up some major doctor appointments and figure out what's wrong with me. The Veteran's Administration always scheduled my stuff conveniently on the exact days I had to work, which was really annoying, and this is one way to fix that!

BUT ENOUGH ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE FOR A SECOND AND TIME FOR SOME SWEET MOOD WHIPLASH BECAUSE I TOOK A DINNER BREAK HERE

While my life has been turning upside down and inside out, the winners of this year's NGUAC have been announced, and I personally enjoyed this year's winners HEAVILY. Everyone send a big congrats and a review to @HollandAlbright, @GameBoyFireworks, and @NatahDN!

The winning submissions, hopefully in the right order, are:

Since they were already frontpaged, I asked Tom to see if we can't do something a little more special. After all these years I still didn't know you could frontpage things twice, so I guess it's a little out of my pay grade, haha.

Now, while I may be a little shorter on money, it's a good thing I'll have some extra time on my hands, because NGADM judging is on like Donkey Kong!

And in the thread!

After that, I have two big commissions to slam out! One -- I'm not even sure I can talk about it yet -- but just to keep myself accountable, it's an OST for a videogame, not to be confused with Lakie's SmashHit OST Megacollab. I also can't post bits of that yet. Kinda got a non-disclosure agreement, but has been a journey learning -- well, whatever kind of house this is? Because it certainly is a genre I haven't made before!

For real what genre is this? I'm illiterate.

The other big project I'm proud to announce is Season One, Episode Eight of the Legend of Korra fan dub. Let's see if we got my episode on tap real quick.

Here you go:

I would have embedded this, but Odysee embeds don't work on NG! Thank VK and other platforms for taking it down over copyright.

Anyway, if you like Legend of Korra, be sure to check out the channel! If you're interested in working with any of the VAs, I can poke them for you!

If you're a voice actor yourself, the casting call for season 2 is up for grabs. Deadline in December.

Besides that we still got singles coming down the pipe. Next up is Little Dreams in Russian, followed by a smashing 90s inspired rap banger with @SkankyMojo!

And that's it! I'll see you guys in NGADM judging, the DMs, replies, and otherwise no later than the 25th! But for now, I gotta get ready for work tomorrow.

See ya!

It's great to hear that you're already recovering from your health condition! Also, that you're already in the process of many projects, I'd be interested in knowing a lot about how you work or how the songs work.
✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧ Nice to hear it!!

Oh wow I posted this like 5 seconds ago. Hi!

How I work -- that's a whopper of a question with many answers. I'll have to put some thought into that or ask for some more specific questions, like what exactly you want to know about

As for the songs, yeah, I can do that! Name one!

@ADR3-N haha yea, sorry about that I usually check my feed around this time. And i see your post <( ̄︶ ̄)>

This has something complex since I don't know if this is done with a granulator or cutting the sample in many ways!
Also awesome detail on the percussion ( ╹▽╹ )

And a specific question, what is the most comfortable way of mixing that you use?
If you also have questions about me, I will answer without any problem.

second! EDIT: well damn...looks I can't even claim second now lol

also you're very bright...assuming you qualified for the GI bill, ever considered going (back) to school for engineering or science or something?

Glad to see you're recovering! And yeah, leaving a job that poisoned you seems very, very reasonable.

Also, Smash Hit? I love that game! I was somewhat involved with the (small) modding community a while back, and I've enjoyed playing it for the past ten years. The music by Douglas Holmquist is one of my favorite OST's for a video game. It perfectly matches the visuals of the game. Let me know if you want any of the old .ogg files from the develpment versions of the game. It's really interesting to see how the music evolved as the game moved forward in production.
