Considering how YT feels about its userbase in general, this sounds about right.

Would like just a little more contrast -- but that might take charcoal to achieve. Nice white-balance.

Literally came here just to 5 Leia. SevenSeize gave ya a s/o. But fr, the detail on the fine hairs at the crown of her head is perf.

DrewJohnson responds:

Thank you very much.

Ahhhh nostalgia. Reminds me of Shin Chan, not to mention your infamous flashes.

Awesome stuff, Nalem! I have no words, other than that Marceline is one of my favorite characters... and also awkwardly the namesake of my ex-gf's american shorthair cat.

This is actually pretty good. I can see what looks like a concrete light source, and the textures are fine. Smudging appears to have worked in your favor here. However it could use just a little more contrast in those shadows on the hat, especially the band and the rim.

DistractedDuck responds:

Yeah, I realized afterward that the shadows weren't great, but I didn't have the amount of professional art supplies then that I do now, so I couldn't really fix it. Currently, I don't actually know where the original is in order to fix it, and I probably wouldn't anyway for fear of screwing it up further. And, yes, I do use smudging a lot in order to blend the pencil strokes, as I feel that it makes it look slightly more realistic. Thanks for the feedback! -Ducki

Not bad. Looks like you're bearing down on your pencil pretty hard though. Recommend coming at the paper at an angle and working on getting your lines nice and thin, working with contrast rather than borders. A value study will help you there.

The way my instructor put it to me, people don't have edges, so why draw edged people? There's cartoon aesthetic, but if you're drawing tons of strands of hair and shadows, is that really what we're going for?

I also see a lot of smudge work. This is okay in plenty of contexts (although my teacher hated it), but on a low contrast piece, it kind of just looks old/dirty.

DistractedDuck responds:

Yeah, this isn't really my best. Nowadays, I'm starting to sketch lightly just to give myself a border, and then just draw and erase the border lines. Thanks for the feedback!

You've got a pretty solid character design going, but those giant nipples are distracting me, lol. That's not exactly a character flaw or anything though. I like the dinky little straps going on. Would prefer not having a white outline around him though. Maybe a more complimentary color. It kinda hurts my eyes, just the contrast, and makes him hard to look at. The high contrast should be on your character, not around him. Otherwise, fine!

Wow. this is absolutely surreal. I have half a mind to ask you to do one for me! Haha. I really love your attention to detail, specifically color and feng shui.

Loving the texture of the wood and the sheen on the metal. That shows your attentiveness as an artist. It could be a little more symmetrical in certain places like the ... pommel? I think that's the word I'm looking for -- but otherwise, enjoyed.

SoundBounce responds:

Thank you for the kind words. I wasn't aiming for the pommel(yes correct word) to be symmetrical but if that's would improve my work i'll keep it in mind for next time!
